FAQ - APPLICATIONS

Can I fit a system on my motorbike?
Answer: Yes, but .... Space? Fuel pressure? Injector location? Some folks have done it!

Can I tune my Diesel engine?
Answer: Yes, but only electronic managed diesel systems. An SMT unit will do it for you.

Can I tune a Polo 1.6 1999 model? What are the effects?
Answer: Your engine is tunable and has some good response. It is recommended that you change your exhaust system as well. This will help your low down torque and higher rpm kW.

I have a 130IS OPEL and I want to increase the power by 25% or more?
Answer: Firstly, if you want that kind of power, you should go for a 160IS. This would be the easiest and probably the cheapest. Complete conversion on your car like cams, gas flow, pipes, air filters, balancing and oversize would also give that increase in power, but is very costly. This should give you 25% more power.

I have fitted a turbo on my engine. Which system do you recommend?
Answer: If you have an engine management system already (and you like to keep it) then a SMT6/7 can be used in addition to your existing management system. These systems allow you to "manipulate" the existing ECU, and if required, and additional injector(s) can be fired. However, the SMT requires the input of an external AMP sensor (to measure the turbo boost).

Where can I get wiring diagrams?
Answer: Wiring diagrams are available on the development CD, please be aware that we are constantly updating these files so if the vehicle you are looking for is not on the CD or if you do not have the CD, please contact us and we will supply one. You can download wiring diagrams as well.

Where would you fit your units in a car?
Answer: You can fit it anywhere inside the car, under the dashboard or under the passenger seat. Our units are not waterproof and therefore we do not recommend mounting the unit in the engine bay.

Can your system be configured to batch fire on all 4 injectors at the same time?
Answer: Yes, the XMS system can be configured to open and close injectors in sequential, batch sequential and parallel modes.

Do I need altitude compensation? I have got manifold pressure.
Answer: While driving under reasonable load you don’t need altitude compensation, but while idling, and without idle control motor you need altitude compensation. An engine tuned at sea level will idle rich at high altitude. The XMS does not use altitude compensation, but you can run closed loop lambda, or and idle control motor, or both.

Do I need wasted spark ignition?
Answer: It eliminates the distributor, but needs TWO pickup points. It uses multiple coils, and as such delivers a better spark, especially at very high RPM.

Does the manifold pressure (AMP) work with a hot cam?
Answer: No, Hot cam engines use the throttle position as a "load" indication. You require more map points for fuel and more ignition throttle points, which are provided by the XMS.

How about moist air? Water injection?
Answer: I am not a specialist, but a certain amount of moisture in the air increases the power output, provided you have enough fuel. Water injection systems are used for dragsters.

On what cylinder engine does the XMS work with?
Answer: The unit will work with 4,6,8 cylinder engines. It is possible to operate on 5, 10,12 cylinder engines, but consult the factory before buying.

Is the ignition output signal a high or low level?
Answer: The ignition output is a weak high-level drive from 0 to 12V. Firing is at the negative edge.

What is the purpose of the ignition amplifier (SPARK-AMP)?
Answer: This is a small unit, normally located in the engine compartment, which can drive two ignition coils. You can use any commercial TRIGGER unit. We recommend our HIGH CURRENT ones (SPARK-AMP2) for turbo applications.
