| Can Perfect Power supply a base map to get me started with the XMS? |
Answer: Yes and No. The WINDOWS software starts with a base-map, and the units are loaded with a base-map prior to delivery. But the map may be for a 6 cylinder engine, and you needed one for a 8 cylinder. Also your requirements may be different. We do have base-maps for all kind of applications, but no one has ever asked for it, because it is so easy to make your own.

| Can the XMS drive ignition on a distributor type car? |
Answer: Yes, you would lock the distributor and then use the XMS to advance and retard the signal going towards it.
|
| Can the XMS drive wasted spark applications? |
Answer: Yes, for this application you would need either a missing tooth wheel, or a twin CB1, CB2 pickup wheel set-up.
|
| Can the XMS handle direct ignition? |
Answer: No. You do need an external ignition trigger, or a SPARK-AMP.
|
| Can the XMS handle knock sensor control? |
Answer: No, we used to do this but sensor placement is critical and not recommended for DIY users. If the sensor is not installed correctly you risk damaging the engine.
|
| Can the XMS read wide band lambda sensors? |
Answer: The XMSL requires an external circuit (WBC), the XMS has one built in. All units can read 0-1V narrow band sensors.
|
| Can the XMS perform Lambda closed loop? |
Answer: Yes, closed and partial closed loop is possible. The XMSL works on narrow band only!
|
| How can I calibrate airflow and temperature sensors? |
Answer: There is a detailed application note in both the SMT and XMS development CDs. Register ONLINE, and upload it.
|
| How many injectors can a single XMS driver handle? |
Answer: It works out to approximately 6x16 ohm injectors. This number decreases when the impedance of the injectors decreases.
|
| How much current can a single XMS driver sink? |
Answer: More or less 6A. We have installed 12A drivers, but they get warm and may switch off above 6Amps.
|
| Is there different tuning software for the four types of units? |
Answer: The four different XMS units run on the same WINDOWS software. Some functions are disabled for the smaller XMSL.
|
| There are four XMS systems available, what are the differences? |
Answer: Price! Here is a short summary:
XMSL For 4 cylinders, 2x6A batch injection, 5 auxiliary outputs, 2 ignition signals, narrow band lambda
XMS For 4-8 cylinders, 4x6A injection, 8 auxiliary outputs, 5 ignition signals, Narrow band lambda
XMS-W Same as above, but with added WIDE BAND LAMBDA
XMS-4I Same as XMS, but with 8x6A direct injection
XMS-W4I All of the above

| What does a XMS Kit come with? |
Answer: There is no kit as such! Each XMS comes with a cable harness. The rest is made up at time of order to suit your requirements.
|
| What is a XMS? |
Answer: The XMS (Extreme Management System)is a FULL engine management system. It controls all the functions of your engine: injection; spark; fuel pump; fan; engine temp; pickups and it can also control turbo; nitrous and extra injectors. It can perform closed loop, and has a very extensive fault handling capability.
|
| What does fault detection mean? |
Answer: A lot of things can (and will) go wrong in the engine bay. This happens during installation, and also during running the engine. The XMS range can detect and indicate most faults and either notify you on you laptop, or take appropriate action. A separate fault screen is available, which enlarges a fault indication and tells you WHAT is wrong.
|
| What is the difference between the XMS and the PRS? |
Answer: The older PRS range is weak on input/output protection. A reversed battery damages the circuit! The XMS range is more protected (we think it is totally protected, but you may prove us wrong), and it can be repaired. The XMS range has extensive fault detection capability, more injector drive, and the ignition drivers are external. The external ignition (SPARK-AMP) amplifiers allow you to choose a suitable low/high current driver.
|
| What is the map switch for? |
Answer: The XMS has two pages of maps stored in memory allowing you to tune the car for two different applications. The map switch input allows you to connect a mechanical switch to the computer, which would allow you to switch pages without a laptop.
|
| What operating system does the tuning software use? |
Answer: WINDOWS XP, 2000, ME. The tuning software can be obtained for free on this website in the downloads section.
|
| What type of injection modes can the XMS handle? |
Answer: It is possible to configure the XMS to run parallel, batch sequential and full sequential injection. The XMSL can handle batch and parallel on 4 cylinder engines.
|
| What types of airflow and temperature sensors can I use? |
Answer: Any analogue type sensor with a signal voltage range between 0-5Vdc. It is a requirement that the type of sensor is a NTC (negative temperature coefficient). The voltage on the sensor should decrease with increasing temperature.
|
| What types of pickups can a XMS read? |
Answer: The XMS is optimized for magnetic multi-tooth per firing trigger. The 36-1, 36-2, 60-1, 48-1, 18+1 types work very well. Consult the factory for other trigger types, and check with the application note section. See: Downloads.
|
| Can I fit an XMS onto an aircraft engine? |
Answer: No, technically you can, but I don’t like to hear about it.
|
| Can the XMS be used in a rotary engine? |
Answer: No. The older PRS4 can, and we have some in stock.
|
| Is the XMS restricted to 500HP? |
Answer: It isn’t, but problems arise with low impedance injectors with large flow rates. Low impedance injectors require a “PEAK and HOLD” circuit at low flow rates. Otherwise the injectors get too warm, and the fuel starts boiling.
