Quads are not new in our lives. I had a quad for a couple of years, even my fiancée had one. But we have never considered fuel injecting one, why?
> 1) They go like a bat out of hell already,
2) 2-stroke engines,
3) No Battery and
4) It’s a kick start.

That was till a John Pires brought a fuel injected 200cc Yamaha Blaster to my shop and asked me to sort out the timing. Absolutely amazing and neat installation that John did. Technically it should have been impossible to do with a SMT5-I “piggy back” unit, but it worked "Well Done John". The bike, according to John, started first time after very little setup.

Here is where the unit was installed, under the seat, next to battery. Even the battery is not a standard item on the Blaster. A special charging regulator had to be installed to keep the battery charged up. The battery only runs the SMT5-I and the high pressure fuel pump. The power relays were installed in the air box, the only place that was guaranteed to be dry.

That’s me with a cold one, holding the throttle stable so that the techs can read the rpm, CO’s and timing. We have not tuned the bike at all yet, just checking what was done and how it worked. Impressive!

Rear
Running the bike at the higher rpm’s it got a little smoky, but that could also have been the oil mixture. You can see the CO meter pipe in the exhaust. Not bad running for a bike without an AMP sensor or throttle position sensor.

We are going to be fitting a throttle position sensor to the standard bike over the weekend and then arranging a dyno day for this bike and the fastest quad in the country. I know already which one will come out tops. Watch this space …

Well the weekend has come and gone, the problems have been fixed and now its time to visit the dyno, click here to read more.
