Well here it is, the first installation of the Perfect Power SMT6 in Canada! The project called for the removal of a very dead D16Z and the installation of something of a greater horsepower value. Economics were a deciding factor in the engine choice so a B16A was decided upon.

There were a lot of decisions to be made with this engine swap, transmission conversion, motor mounts, and etcetera. But one of the least of our worries was computer control of this engine. It was decided to remove the Honda P30 computer entirely and replace it with the Honda PR3 computer. There were a lot of questions on whether the fuel and ignition mapping differences between these ECU’s were going to be an issue. Knowing that we were going to install a SMT after the fact really made these questions a non-issue.

The fact that we received the first SMT6 in Canada the same week we were finishing up this project made it the perfect candidate for the car.

Installation of the SMT6 went very smoothly with very minimal differences to the SMT5 of which we were used to. Tuning the SMT6 proved to be no more work than the SMT5 and with the added options of Temp and AMP on the SMT6 make it the ultimate tuning tool. Since the following week of installation saw over 6 inches of snow here we have been impressed with the SMT6.   The modifications to fuel have been kept in check until the engine maintains a set operating temperature.

One of the greatest power gains in this application have come from the variable triggering levels set up for the VTEC cam controller. The final gearing on this application dictated a fairly high rpm in cruise range (3500 rpm @ 100kph and 4800 rpm @ 120kph) With this in mind the extra injector circuit was used to control the cam switching. At low to mid range load (cruising) the cam is not switched. At mid to full load the cam is switched at 4000 rpm giving this car “ATTITUDE” anywhere between stand still and 160 kph.

We have yet to dyno the car and giving we are now settled into a foot of snow here it will be spring when we do. But given the seat of the pants feeling this car gives, with a constant pull from very low rpm all the way to 8000 rpm and above. We have no doubt the dyno figures will be as expected.

As a last note to this project, we just adjusted the coil-over suspension up 2 inches and installed the customers SNOW TIRES…. yes this is a daily commuter car and used all winter here in Canada. More to come on SMT installations on Talon AWD Turbo, Toyota Supra Turbo, Dodge Neon Nitrous application, and a few others. Including a Honda Insight (electric/gas Hybrid) to be used to compete in solo events.
