Kevin from Essential Speed in Cambridge Ontario Canada builds custom header and turbo applications. Kevin contacted Canspeed to ask if the Perfect Power SMT5i would handle a custom turbo installation on a 1997 Turbo Rav 4. Never passing up a challenge and a chance to prove the capabilities of the SMT we immediately agreed to go to Cambridge and install the unit.

As it seems with most projects all did not go as planned, I arrived in Cambridge after a 3 hour drive at 9am. It seemed that Kevin had been at the shop till the wee hours of the night before, and had just enough time to go home have some breakfast a very quick nap and back to his shop to meet me. He spent most of the day finishing the Turbo and intercooler installation, and even jury-rigged the intake piping with black electrical tape just to get the vehicle running so we could install the SMT5i. The installation went quite smoothly (laughing) and by Midnight we had the vehicle running smoothly and some base line tuning done.

The following day the Rav was taken back to the Dyno to see what had been accomplished. Prior to the project start it had been run on the Dyno at just a tad under 90 HP at the wheels. With some road tuning on the way to the Dyno run the Rav pulled an impressive 147 hp with the turbo and SMT installed.

The unit has had some fine-tuning with the SMT since the last Dyno run and Kevin’s Customer is extremely pleased with the results. The Customers motivation for the turbo was so as not to be embarrassed when housewives in mini vans out powered him on the highway and last report he was relearning to drive the Rav so it wasn’t lighting the tires up at intersections.
