The performance of a motorcar engine is different for many people. Modern engines are good and hardly have any performance faults. Can the performance of these engines be improved? Yes, these marvelous engineering feats can be improved for your application, if your application is special. In general terms they are good, but may be average for your application.


Broadly speaking, performance is two things:


IMPROVING FUEL ECONOMY
IMPROVING POWER


This applies to petrol and diesel engines. The following is a broad generalization and not a scientific analysis.

You can by putting more fuel in, even when the engine smokes already. Then, comes a point when the piston melts.

 

IMPROVING PETROL ENGINE FUEL ECONOMY

Apart from the construction of a petrol engine, its performance depends on the mixing ratio of air to fuel. This is called AFR (Air Fuel Ratio). There are three significant points:


AFR=12.5    Max power, rich, increased fuel consumption, increased emissions
AFR=14.7    Reduced power, best emissions, sweet point
AFR=15.5    Best fuel consumption, increased emission, less power

 
It is safe to say that the car manufacturer goes to AFR=12.5 if you are applying full throttle. Then it is also safe to say that the best way to increase gas mileage is to change your drive style. There is the possibility that the car manufacturer has not optimized the car for your application: Temperature, altitude, moisture, fuel quality and general use. IMPROVING PETROL ENGINE POWER

Easy! To the point of AFR=12.5 (see above). If you need to improve the power more, then you have to look at tuning the ignition for better fuel and getting more air in to the engine. Improving the air inlet tract can do small improvements. Large power increases come from turbo or superchargers.

 

SUMMARY

Diesels are easy, and petrol engines require a little effort and the help of the SMT8 range of products. How much can I improve a petrol engine? Practical experience showed that a minuscule 5% to a whopping 40% are possible. It all depends on your car. Consult with you local dealer or garage mechanic and listen to his advice.
